Two things in life are certain.

Yeah, you've heard it a thousand times before, death and taxes.

What most don't think about, is that the rest of life is completely unknown and unpredictable (read some of the theories on Chaos).

If you thought that you were in control of some things, the truth is, you aren't.

Why am I talking about this? Because the markets are exactly the same, unpredictable and uncontrollable. And that's the reason why most traders/investors battle to stay solvent, let alone make a profit. Some try to predict the market, rely on broker's tips, take a punt on a "sure thing" or hold onto losers, "knowing" that they will work out in the end, and the list goes on.

Here is a good tip.

Always expect the opposite of your trading strategy to take place, and plan accordingly. This way you can minimize the risk and maximize the gains, without exposing your account to ruin.

I call it fear while hoping and hope while fearing.

For example when you get in a new trade you automatically hope it will be profitable. You'll need to reverse that and fear the market will go against you. If you do this mental switch you will respect risk and respect the fact that the market can do anything anytime. This will make it so you place your protective stop and don't move it. This will stop you from adding to a losing trade.

On the other hand when you are in a good trend and you are fearful it will turn against you and you are thinking of breaking your trading plan by "cashing out now" you need to reverse it. Instead of fearing it will turn against you, hope it will go all the way and be a long trend.

The system will tell you when to get out, not your emotions. Emotions will always let you down, but following a proven system won't.
